Pet Peeves
Pet Peeves on New England Handicap Access are situations shared with us by our users that make life a little more difficult for someone with a disability. It is assumed that there is no intention to cause difficulty. Pet Peeves reflect how hard it is at times for someone without a disability to see the world through the eyes of a person with that disability. The purpose of listing pet peeves is to help broaden the understanding of the experience of the disabiled for all of us and create suggestions for change.
- Placement of toilet paper dispensers, especially the large round ones, right above a grap bar. This makes it difficult to use that section of the bar (often the most important). If the dispenser has to be in that general location and if the bar is at a good height, the dispenser could fit below the bar. It would still cause some difficulty but not as much.
- Not having paper towel dispensers next to the sink. Often the dispensers are some distance from the sink. By the time you get to the towels more than your hands need to be dried.
- Front-loading covers on trash barrels in fast food restaurants. If a person is able to use only one hand it is difficult to throw trash away without spilling garbage on the floor.
- Restaurants and other establishments that store chairs and other equipment in the hallways by the restrooms making it impossible to get to rest room in a wheelchair.
