We Need Your Help--Sharing Information

New England Handicap Access is a developing source of information about the accessibility of public places. The data provided here comes from people's reported experiences gaining access to public places in New England.

At the heart of the web site are the databases that hold the information for each state. Because the web site is new and the databases are based on information from people who have used the web site, you are not likely to have much success in searching for information at this early stage. We share your frustration and invite you to help grow the databases by reporting your experiences.

By sharing our experiences we have the potential to improve the quality of life for many others who face the challenge of achieving greater assessibility. The alternative for most of us is to rely on informaton provided by people who manage the places we want to visit, e.g., listings in tourist publications and advertisements. While this information is well intended, the first-hand information provided by people for whom accessibility is a daily fact of life is likely to be more useful. Please take the time to send an e-mail sharing your recent experiences and become part of this cooperative effort.

Within-State Search for Information

To find information about the type of place you would like to visit in a particular state and city begin by choosing the state you want to visit. A State Page will appear. You will then be asked to choose a city and a type of place. When you submit your request a report will be displayed for each place listed in the database. The report will provide the Name, Address and Phone Number of each place, a statement of Level of Accessibility, Comments ( about entry, ease of moving around and the bathroom facilities), Parking information and any Links to the place.

State-Wide Search

When you choose a State Page you have the option of conducting a search for the entire state for types of places that are less common such as theatres, sports arenas, museums, parks/beaches and boating/fishing.

Links to Other Web Sites

The State Page will also contain additional links for sources of information dealing with accessibility.

Pet Peeves

Pet Peeves on New England Handicap Access are situations shared with us by our users that make life a little more difficult for someone with a disability. The purpose of listing pet peeves is to help all of us better understand the experience of being disabled and to encourage suggestions for change.
